Created by B.K.S. Iyevgar, is a form of yoga know for its use of props, such as belts and blocks, as aids in performing asanas (postures). It is firmly based on the traditional eight limbs of yoga as expounded by Patanjali in his Yoga Sutra, emphasizing the development of strength, stamina, flexibility and balance, as well as concentration (Dharana) and meditation (Dhyana).
A form of Hatha Yoga, it focuses on the structural alignment of the physical body through the development of asanas. Through the practice of a system of asanas, it aims to unite the body, mind and spirit for health and well-being.
This discipline is considered a powerful tool to relieve the stresses of modern-day life, which in turn can help promote total physical and spiritual well-being.Staff.htmlshapeimage_5_link_0

In selecting your class, the following explanations of experience levels may be helpful to you.

  1. Basic Beg 1 & 2 – The foundations of Hatha Yoga. this class includes the essential building blocks of yoga: mostly standing poses form the core work as they provide the strength, stamina and the will to study yoga.  These building blocks are the substance of moor advanced work and at the same time they provide a complete and balanced practice in their own right.  Observation, relaxation skills and breath awareness are also included. 0-3 years of experience.

  2. Beg 2/Intermediate – A wider range of poses from different categories such as: back-bends, inversions and arm balances.  Learning more about sequencing, sustain poses longer and body wisdom/self awareness are included in this level.  You will find breathing coordinates with poses more naturally. 1+ year or more experience

  3. Intermediate/Experienced – Permission of instructor is required. If you are a dropping-in, please consult with Ann Bissanti a few minutes before class.  Practice deepens, poses are held longer and new complex poses may be tackled.  Inversions and mental flexibility are expected.  The insertion of pranayama classes, meditation segments, restorative and flowing sequence, yoga philosophy are used at teacher’s discretion.  3+ years or more with consistent practice.

  4. All Levels – Everyone is welcome. No prior experience is necessary.

  5. Multi Level – Some prior yoga experience (6 months) is recommended.  Includes changing but well balanced yoga practices based primarily on foundation work and most of the essential yoga asanas.
